einsteinAlbert Einstein, "My First Impression of the U.S.A."

"The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the prohibition law. For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this.

UK - London - Boxer is shot after asking drinkers not to smoke
James Oyebola: shot after he asked three men to stop smoking
Witnesses said Nigerian-born Mr Oyebola had politely stepped in to help staff who had asked the three men to observe the smoking ban. One said: 'He wasn't being aggressive. He pointed out that smoking was now against the law. [...] One of the men pulled out a gun and fired at point-blank range into his face and leg.
Mr Oyebola, a father of two, was critically ill last night on a life support machine [...] 'He was just being a good citizen but the three saw it as a sign of disrespect. On their way out one pulled a gun and started firing at James.' read this is London

Wales- UK : Deaf man attacked for smoking at bus station
by Anna Hammond, South Wales Echo
A DEAF man was beaten up at Cardiff central bus station for smoking a cigarette. Police have praised a member of the public who realised he was on the same bus as the man suspected of attacking the 56-year-old and called 999 from his mobile phone. The incident happened at stand B1 of the bus station at around 4.15pm on Tuesday when the victim, who is profoundly deaf, was smoking a cigarette. Someone stood behind him in the shelter asked him to stop smoking but because the man, who is from Canton, Cardiff, has hearing difficulties he did not respond.
He was then attacked, knocked to the floor, kicked and punched. He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment while his attacker fled from the scene on the 12b bus towards Riverside, Cardiff. A passenger believing he was on the same bus as the attacker got off at a bus stop on Ninian Park Road and contacted police. The bus was stopped minutes later and a 35-year-old from Ely was arrested on suspicion of assault. Police are appealing for witnesses to what they have described as an "unprovoked attack" and are keen to trace an American or Canadian woman who was at the bus stand. Smoking has been banned in bus shelters since the all-Wales ban which came into force in April. Anyone with information should contact police on 029 2022 2111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Read

Smoke ban will 'destroy' our social life - A GROUP of elderly residents are asking for the right to defy the smoking ban and light up in their communal lounge.
Thirty-five people, who live in Stretton Lodge, claim the no-smoking ban will have a big impact on their social life. The smokers are petitioning Coventry City Council to exempt the lounge at their home from the smoking ban which came in on July 1.
They claim it will "destroy" their social life at the home in Knightlow Avenue, Willenhall, Coventry. Marion Harris, aged 63, Peggy Stevens, aged 82 and John McNeil, aged 74, are just three of the smokers at the home. Read...

A licensee who is defying the smoking ban has been sent a warning letter from his council.
But Tony Blows has told the MA he is determined to continue to allow smoking at the Dog Inn at Ewyas Harold, near Hereford."If a further visit is made and offences are witnessed, you will either be cautioned and interviewed at that time or invited to attend an interview under caution. Following the interview a decision will be made as to whether to recommend to the Head of Environmental Health and Trading Standards to initiate a prosecution.
When asked if he will now comply with the smoking ban, Blows said: "Absolutely not. Nothing has changed. In fact I've got calls from pubs that have put ashtrays back because they have lost trade."
Blows said he allows smoking in a dedicated room of his pub.
"I"m going back to what we were after, which is a smoking room, and it"s working absolutely fine. Read...

French new President Sarkozy smoked cigars as he had his meeting with the journalists onthe 19th to present his new government.

He always said he would find exceptions normal for the 31.000 "Bar-Tabacs" the tobacco sales points which are bars at the same tie (90% smokers as customers... of course). Prime minister Fillon is against the discrimination of smokers (2006) and he said again during the campaign in may 2007 that he would still propose a modification of the bans of november 2006 (enacted on 1st of February in France, and to be enacted for bars, restaurants and discotheques on 1st of January 2008). State secretary Santini is always a cigar in his mouth, and supported the Smokers Organization "Fumeurs en Col"re" in 2004. Candidate Bayrou proposed before the presidential election the spanish solution. So it doesn't look too bad for France at the moment :-). We started a mail-petition to the president and the prime minister.

Keest, from the Dutch Smokers party, "Partij Tegen Bettuteling", (Party against Nannying, which used to be the "Dutch smokers party") just explained us the dutch solutions. In Netherlands you can smoke everywhere in the pubs where there are no employees: So they are just throwing everybody out and replacing the employees through drink-spending machines.
The protection of the employees ist the unemployment: in the employment state offices, they will have a smoke free environment... and will smoke outside and at home near the children.

Smoking ban stubbed out! Hamish Howitt and smokers at the Happy Scots Bar
A CONTROVERSIAL Blackpool landlord is preparing to take on the Government by openly flouting the nationwide smoking ban.
Hamish Howitt, who runs the Happy Scots in Rigby Road, today invited every smoker in the town to head to his bar on July 1 " the day lighting up in public places is outlawed.
The landlord, who set up his own political party " UK FAGS " to oppose the smoking ban, insists he will not pay any fine levied against him and says he will take his case to the European Court of Human Rights. He claims stopping smoking inside pubs adds up to a "hate crime". Mr Howitt says he will flaunt the ban when it comes into force. He said: "As far as I'm concerned this ban isn't legal. Smokers are going to be humiliated, made to stand outside."To me it's a hate crime and I'm not going to take it lying down. "I won't be stopping my customers smoking.
"They can try and fine me, they can take me to court, but I won't pay.
"I've been in touch with my lawyers and we are already preparing to take this to the Court of Human Right. more...
